The prescription drug Zestoretic is used for the treatment of hypertension, or high blood pressure. In fact it is actually a blend of two active ingredients, namely Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide, which mixed together form a very powerful combination. Lisinopril is an enzyme inhibitor which is used for Angiotension conversion and is part of the ACE group (Angiotension Converting Enzyme). Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (or water pill).
What does this mean in layman’s terms?
The inhibitors in Lisinopril (the ACE) relax the artery muscles, slowing down the production of Angiotensin II, and also dilate the arteries thus allowing a stronger flow of blood to the heart. The other component of Zestoretic, Hydrochlorothiazide, stops the body from absorbing too much salt, which could lead to too many fluids being retained. When the two are brought together, a powerful medication for reducing high blood pressure is the result.
How do I know what dosage to take?
Firstly, always take Zestoretic in strict accordance with your doctor’s instructions. Whilst it is not necessary to take this drug on an empty stomach, each pill should however be taken with water. Never take two doses at the same time, especially if you forgot to take the previous dose. It is also important to remember that Zestoretic is a complete course, so even if you feel better make sure you finish the full treatment.
Are there any precautions I should take?
If you are pregnant, or planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding then do not take Zestoretic. Try to avoid drinking alcohol during the treatment, but do drink a lot of non-alcoholic liquids if you are feeling dehydrated. Let your doctor know if you are diabetic, or suffer from kidney, liver or heart diseases. Also inform your doctor about any other drugs you are taking to make sure that they interact safely, in particular any of these listed below:
• Steroids
• Insulin
• Diuretics
• Barbiturates or narcotics
• Anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin
