High blood pressure is a major health problem that affects many people - a lot of which don’t even realize that they have it. In some cases, patients are not advised to take medication, but rather to adjust their diets and exercise regimen. This is great advice for people who only suffer from mild to moderate problems.

Lowering your sodium intake will lead to a reduction of your blood pressure. Those affected with high blood pressure often claim that reducing their sodium intake reduces their blood pressure as well. It is very important to find out which foods in your diet are rich in sodium, and to reduce them or eliminate them altogether.

Eating more fruits and vegetables and even some grains increases your intake of important vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Studies suggest that people with a diet high in these foods and low in fats can reduce blood pressure in a small, but significant way.

Adding exercise to this change in diet can improve the blood pressure reduction. Exercise is great to prevent and reduce hypertension, and some studies show that people who exercise regularly have longer life spans than people who don’t exercise. Aside from reducing the chances to develop cardiovascular disease, exercise also lowers your risk to become obese, which is another cause of high blood pressure.

Exercise is said to be the foundation for successful behavioral change programs. Exercise has been shown to make people feel positive about themselves and helps to reduce stress, a factor that not only raises blood pressure, but makes you feel less inclined to stick to the positive plans you’ve set in motion.

Eating a healthy diet and exercising are two proven ways to reduce your blood pressure. But, they are not the only factors that you need to pay attention to. You can see a marked difference if you also manage your alcohol and caffeine intake. You are much better off if you dramatically reduce these beverages or you completely drop them from your daily routine. You would also benefit from quitting smoking. Of course it is easier said than done. Giving up these substances can be challenging. In fact, in order to completely rid yourself of these behaviors can take months, even a year or more in some instances!

And certainly, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to give up stress. This is definitely not easy, but your overall health can benefit from it. If you can’t seem to do it alone, you might benefit from taking a stress management class.

Even if common knowledge teaches that managing your diet and adopting a regimen of exercise can lower your blood pressure, it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor about any changes in your lifestyle and in your intake of medications.
