The problem with high blood pressure or hypertension to give it it’s proper name is that very often people are unaware they are suffering from it until they start suffering the side effects. This is one of the reasons why it is called the “silent killer”, so often knowing what could cause high blood pressure and preventing it is the best way to treat it.

Accordingly knowing what could cause high blood pressure is often the best thing you can do. As the old saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and knowing some of the known causes enables you to do something about it.

One of the first things is that of salt. Salt is already in almost all processed food, you don’t need to add so much to everything you eat. There are also salt substitutes and even salt with reduced sodium that you can get at your local grocery store.

Obesity is also major problem. Overweight people are more liable to have a higher blood pressure than their slim counterpart. The heart and other vital organs have to work harder which leads to added strain.

Alcohol is another of the things that can increase your blood pressure. Drinking, in moderation, 1 or 2 small glasses of wine, studies tell us, is beneficial for your hypertension. Drinking more than that however, leads to health concerns.

Another possible cause is the “pill”, the contraceptive pill. Women who take the pill have a greater risk of having high blood pressure. Having your blood pressure test every year, even twice a year, is highly recommended.

People should also be aware that many medications also raise your blood pressure and certain combinations are dangerous. Doctors and pharmacists are very aware of this and carefully monitor the medications you take. This is why it is very important for you to go to the same pharmacist for all of your medication.

Seeing your doctor regularly and having an annual physical will ensure that your blood pressure is checked, but you can also do it yourself at your local pharmacist or with your own blood pressure cuff.
