Many people don’t realize how widespread high blood pressure is, and how potentially dangerous it can be. Even if you don’t have symptoms, it’s possible to have high blood pressure, and this can lead to life threatening conditions if it’s not treated. While the causes of high blood pressure are not always clear, some can be identified, and we’ll be looking at some of these here.

While people of any age can have high blood pressure, the risk increases as you age. The typical age that men develop high blood pressure is younger than for women, but for both the risks increase in middle age. The fact is, however, that anyone can develop high blood pressure at any age, and this is increasingly true as more younger people become overweight. In other words, it makes good sense to get regular blood pressure readings, and the older you get the more important this becomes. Many of your everyday activities, such as how you eat, and if you smoke, can also influence your blood pressure.

Even experts don’t agree about the exact causes of high blood pressure, and very often the cause can’t be identified. When doctors cannot find a definite cause of high blood pressure, which is actually most of the time, they call it essential hypertension. Even though there are many habits and elements that make it more likely that you’ll develop high blood pressure, in most cases there is not one simple cause that can be identified. Checking your blood pressure with a reliable device is the only way to know if it’s at a healthy or unhealthy level. The important thing is that, no matter what the cause, high blood pressure can be treated and managed, either by lifestyle changes alone or with the help of medication.

High cholesterol may be one cause of high blood pressure, and both are associated with many ailments such as heart disease. If you limit the “bad” cholesterol in your diet, and have healthy amounts of “good” cholesterol, you can bring your overall cholesterol to a healthy level. Atherosclerosis, or blockage of the arteries, as well as hypertension, can result from having high levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. HDL, meanwhile, is good cholesterol that unblocks your arteries. The healthy type of fats, which are found in oils such as olive, coconut and many fish oils can help to improve your cholesterol levels, along with getting enough exercise. Unhealthy fats such as trans fats, junk food and a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to bad cholesterol in your body. Cholesterol is something you can regulate in your diet, so this is one way to help control your blood pressure, as these two factors are usually related.

It can be helpful to understand the causes of high blood pressure, but even when you can’t identify these, you can still take steps to reduce it. Depending on your particular situation, your doctor can tell you the best way to return your blood pressure to a healthy level. We’ve looked at just a few of the possible risk factors for high blood pressure. The main thing is to be committed to managing your high blood pressure, whether this means exercising more, changing your diet or reducing stress in your life.
