If left untreated serious diseases can result which is why it’s extremely important to identify it as soon as possible. You can check your own blood pressure at home with a kit or about anywhere else you might go including the grocery store. The causes of high blood pressure that are discussed below are some of the more common ones, but every individual is different.

One known cause of high blood pressure is smoking. Along with all of the other health problems smoking can cause, it can also increase your blood pressure. Your arteries can become blocked and hardened when you smoke, and this contributes to high blood pressure. To some degree, the risk smoking poses for blood pressure is related to how heavily you smoke, so naturally if you are a heavy smoker it’s especially risky. What’s most important to realize, though, is that any smoking, or even breathing in other people’s smoke, increases your health risks. While it’s not always easy to quit smoking, it’s worth the effort, as this is a simple way to lower your blood pressure.

Even experts don’t agree about the exact causes of high blood pressure, and very often the cause can’t be identified. When doctors cannot find a definite cause of high blood pressure, which is actually most of the time, they call it essential hypertension.

Sleep apnea is one of the lesser know causes of high blood pressure. Sleep apnea is a disorder where you stop breathing during sleep for up to a minute at a time. People with sleep apnea often snore as well which is a symptom of obstructed breathing while asleep.

Foods are also guilty of contributing to high blood pressure. One of these foods, salt, is well known for its role in hypertension which is why doctors recommend a low sodium diet. Many nutritionists believe other foods such as those high in sugar and fats can contribute to hypertension. On the other hand, if you eat lots of fruits and vegetables and avoid junk foods, it will be easier for you to control your blood pressure without taking any medication. This is not the only cause of high blood pressure but it is an important one that needs your attention.

When it comes to identifying the causes of high blood pressure, you have to consider your family and medical history, diet and lifestyle. With the help of your doctor, you can develop healthier habits to control your blood pressure. We’ve been looking at some of the causes of high blood pressure, and in some cases they can be fairly straightforward. Fortunately, you can always make healthy changes that will lower your blood pressure, no matter what the cause.
