It’s not always easy to identify the cause of high blood pressure, as there are many elements that can contribute to hypertension, and in some cases it isn’t even possible to find a cause. Yet it’s important to find out if you have high blood pressure, as this can lead to many serious health problems. Knowing the causes can help you avoid them.

High blood pressure is common in pregnant women but it is usually severe although it does sometimes need to be treated with medication. Preeclampsia, a sudden rise in blood pressure to extreme levels during pregnancy, is a dangerous condition for both the mother and the unborn baby. While women who had high blood pressure before becoming pregnant have a greater than average chance of having this problem, it can also occur in women with no history of hypertension. This is why monitoring blood pressure is so important during pregnancy.

Heavy drinkers of alcohol are putting themselves at risk for hypertension. You may have heard that light drinking, of wine in particular, is good for your heart health, but this only refers to one or two drinks. However, it’s also true that people who consume more than two alcoholic beverages per day have a higher risk of health problems such as high blood pressure. For people who have trouble controlling their alcohol consumption, it’s preferable for them to stay away from it than to overindulge. So if you are able to limit your intake of alcohol, light drinking may be good for your health, but more than this is harmful.

Even though there are many habits and elements that make it more likely that you’ll develop high blood pressure, in most cases there is not one simple cause that can be identified. Checking your blood pressure with a reliable device is the only way to know if it’s at a healthy or unhealthy level. Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly what causes high blood pressure, but meanwhile you can still take actions to lower your risks of hypertension or control it once it’s been diagnosed.

On the other hand, HDL is the good kind of cholesterol, and this actually reverses the damage done by bad cholesterol. By eating healthy foods and getting regular exercise, you can improve your cholesterol levels. Lowering your levels of bad cholesterol is mainly a matter of avoiding unhealthy foods, such as fast food, and most foods that contain processed carbohydrates and trans fats.

Good health involves paying attention to many factors, and your blood pressure and cholesterol are among the most important of these. These are only a few of the causes to be aware of for hypertension. Get regular checkups if you have a family history or any of the above risk factors for high blood pressure.
