Having your blood pressure checked regularly is the only way to know if you have high blood pressure which has many causes. Health experts have not found one single cause of high blood pressure but several factors can contribute to it. Here is some information on conditions that can cause high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is common in pregnant women but it is usually severe although it does sometimes need to be treated with medication. Preeclampsia, a sudden rise in blood pressure to extreme levels during pregnancy, is a dangerous condition for both the mother and the unborn baby. A woman with high blood pressure before pregnancy is at a greater risk for preeclampsia but it can still affect a woman with no history of hypertension. This is why it’s important for pregnant women to monitor their blood pressure.

If you have certain long term illnesses, they can raise your risk of developing high blood pressure. Especially in the elderly, kidney disease is a common cause of hypertension. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes damage the kidneys which can also lead to high blood pressure. You are at a greater risk for developing kidney disease or diabetes if there is a family history. If you have been diagnosed with either diabetes or any kind of kidney disease, your doctor should be monitoring your blood pressure and may even prescribe medication to help manage it.

Sleep apnea is one cause of high blood pressure that is not as well known. Sleep apnea sufferers stop breathing for up to a minute at a time while they are sleeping at night. Those with sleep apnea tend to snore as this is a symptom of obstructed breathing. Because sleep apnea prevents you from getting restful sleep, people with this condition are often tired. Doing a sleep study at a sleep disorder center is the only way to diagnose this condition that mainly affects those that smoke and who are overweight. Not only does chronic sleep apnea contribute to high blood pressure but also to heart disease so it’s important to find out if you have this condition.

Work with your doctor to find out may be causing your high blood pressure if you have this problem, as there are many causes. You can make the necessary changes to reverse your high blood pressure if you know what caused it. Because there are many causes of high blood pressure, even if some of the ones mentioned above apply to you, you should still examine your lifestyle and medical history.
